Based on advance estimates, Malaysia’s GDP grew by 4.8% year-on-year in 4Q 2024, slower than the previous quarter’s 5.3% growth (figure 1). For the whole of 2024, the Malaysian economy grew by 5.1%, up from 3.6% in 2023.

The services sector increased 5.3% year-on-year in 4Q 2024 (table 1), underpinned by expansion across all sub-sectors, including wholesale and retail trade, transportation and storage as well as information and communication.

Growth of the manufacturing sector moderated to 4.3% in 4Q 2024 from 5.6% in 3Q 2024.

The construction sector grew by 19.6% year-on-year in 4Q 2024, supported by growth of residential buildings and non-residential buildings construction activities.

The agriculture sector fell by 0.6% year-on-year in 4Q 2024, due to slower growth in oil palm and forestry & logging sub-sectors.

The mining sector continued to contract in 4Q 2024, mainly due to lower production in the crude oil & condensate sub-sector.

Note from Publisher
The catastrophic wildfires that have been ravaging Los Angeles in the past week are among the most destructive in California's history. While the fires have been exacerbated by drought conditions, low humidity, and strong wind, climate change certainly plays a part in causing the fires to reach catastrophic scale. With Donald Trump who says climate crisis is “one of the great scams” and promises to “drill, drill, drill” coming into office, wildfires and other climate change-related disasters are expected to jump in the US in the years to come. The US economy and Americans will pay a heavy price for not taking climate change seriously.
