China – Jan Composite Purchasing Managers Index

Affected by workers returning hometown for Chinese New Year celebration, the manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) in Jan fell 1.0 percentage points from Dec to 49.1% (table 1).


 


The seasonally adjusted business activity index of non-manufacturers fell to 50.2% in Jan (table 2), sustained by higher demand for travel-related services.



Combining the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors, the composite purchasing managers index in Jan retreated to 50.1% (figure 1). The forward-looking production expectation and expectations of business activity indices posted strong readings in Jan. Given the latest round of stimulus measures, China’s manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors are expected to improve further in the coming months.

At the same time, like snakes, one needs to constantly undergo ecdysis to regenerate and transform to stay relevant and competitive. Let us embrace the positive qualities of snakes and welcome a prosperous Year of the Wood Snake.
